Background of the Study
Rural entrepreneurship is critical to fostering economic development and alleviating poverty in rural areas. In Argungu Local Government Area (LGA) of Kebbi State, entrepreneurship has the potential to unlock economic opportunities and improve livelihoods, particularly for youth and women. However, rural entrepreneurs often face challenges such as limited access to capital, markets, and business development resources. Development communication, which focuses on the strategic use of communication tools and platforms to promote social change, can play a pivotal role in addressing these challenges. By enhancing access to information on entrepreneurial opportunities, business development skills, and market trends, development communication can empower rural entrepreneurs and stimulate local economic growth. Through radio programs, community outreach, mobile communication, and social media campaigns, rural entrepreneurs in Argungu can be educated and motivated to engage in economic activities that benefit the local economy. This study aims to explore the role of development communication in promoting rural entrepreneurship in Argungu LGA and assess the effectiveness of various communication strategies in fostering entrepreneurship.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the potential for entrepreneurship to drive economic growth in Argungu LGA, many rural residents face significant barriers to starting and growing businesses, including a lack of information about available opportunities, business skills, and access to markets. Development communication strategies, if effectively implemented, could address these barriers by disseminating valuable information, offering entrepreneurship training, and connecting local entrepreneurs to markets and resources. However, despite the presence of development communication initiatives, many rural residents remain unaware of the opportunities available to them, leading to low levels of entrepreneurial activity. This study seeks to examine how development communication strategies can be used to promote rural entrepreneurship and overcome these challenges.
